When do I need to reapply for an ESTA?

A new travel authorization may be required in any of the following cases:

  • The traveler is issued a new passport
  • The traveler changes his or her name
  • Traveler changes gender
  • The traveler’s country of citizenship changes; or
  • The circumstances underlying the traveler’s previous answers to any of the questions on the ESTA application that require a “yes” or “no” answer have changed.

The entry permit is usually issued for two years or until the applicant’s passport expires, whichever comes first. ESTA will provide the dates of validity after the approval of the application. Therefore, the traveler must apply for a new entry permit when the previous ESTA permit or applicant’s passport expires. The appropriate fee will be charged for each new application submitted.
